Ministry of Gender chief administrative secretary, Rachel Shebesh, now claims President Uhuru Kenyatta was arm-twisted by his deputy, William Ruto, to endorse McDonald Mariga, the Jubilee Party candidate in the race for Kibra by-election.

Speaking in Kibra constituency on Friday, September 27, during a meeting with women from the area, Shebesh alleged that on September 18, DP Ruto and MPs allied to him “gained access to State House through the back-door, and pressurised the Head of State to endorse the former Harambee Stars player”.

“Jubilee Party belongs to Uhuru Kenyatta. Should I tell you why that is a statement of fact? Because he is the president,” Shebesh told the women from Kibra.

“On that day [September 18] when the president endorsed Mariga for Kibra race, I was in State House. I know how they mounted pressure on the president, and how they gained entry to State House. They used the backdoor,” Shebesh sensationally alleged.

“I know how they exerted pressure to have pictures they took with the Head of State to be shared online.

“You and I both know our president is very vocal; he has a voice. On the Mariga endorsement issue, did you hear or watch him speak anywhere? We only saw pictures, he did not speak.

“When Uhuru wants something, he speaks out. But on the Mariga issue, there was only a picture with no sound (sic).

“A picture with no sound (sic) communicates that whatever that has been captured in the picture is kipindiree (showbiz).

“Kibra constituents, remember one thing: that you people are the ones who should enjoy the fruits of the handshake between Uhuru and Raila more than any other faction. Remember during past elections, you people served diligently as Raila’s army.

“In this handshake era, there is no one [from Government] who would come to battle you simply because you are supporting Raila’s ideology. Uhuru and Raila, today, are working in such a seamless manner, a reality today that seemed like a pipe dream a few, or many, years ago.

“Let those people give us peace as we serve the people of Kenya.

“Should I tell you something? We are supporting handshake in Kibra, and are highly respectful of Raila Odinga.

“You know how 2017’s two presidential elections were divisive. It was even impossible for rivaling political supporters to visit each other’s turf comfortably. There were two factions: The Republic of Kenya leader’s people and the ‘people’s president’ supporters. How did you expect us to walk freely in this country?

“Uhuru had to look for Raila… Can I repeat? Uhuru looked for Raila, it wasn’t the other way round as claimed by some people. Raila never looks for people, he only needs to show up with his multitude and things will be done his way.

“Uhuru looked for Raila for Kenya to have peace. Sisi handshake hatutoki. It is at Kibra that we will prove to Raila Amolo Odinga that we respect him,” said Shebesh, as she threw her support behind, Imran Okoth, who is the ODM Party’s candidate in the race for Kibra by-election, which is scheduled for November 7.

DP Ruto’s team is yet to respond to Shebesh’s allegations.
