A 44-year-old man from Mbeya, Tanzania has been arrested after he was on Wednesday, September 23, allegedly caught in a lodging facility with his pupil, a 14-year-old girl.

Tanzania’s anti-corruption agency (Takururu) said the suspect, Adelhard Mjingo, who is the head-teacher at Nyaregete Primary School in Mbarali, lured the learner into the guest house after promising to help her pass her final exams scheduled for later this year.

Mbeya Region’s Takururu boss, Julieth Matechi, confirmed the incident, saying Mjingo had booked himself into the guest room with the girl with the intention of defiling her.

“One of the local residents called and informed us that they had seen the teacher entering a lodging facility with an underage girl. We deployed our officers, who went to the lodging and arrested the suspect,” said Matechi.

The girl claimed the head-teacher had threatened to fail her in her final Standard Seven exams if she won’t entertain his sexual advances.

“On the date of the incident, the suspect bade other teachers at his institution goodbye, saying he was going to attend a workshop on vaccination in Rujewa, Mbeya Region. Upon arriving at the seminar venue, he signed the attendance register and left shortly thereafter,” said Matechi.

The head-teacher is reported to have gone to pick the teenager, whom she took to a lodging facility in Mbeya Town.

“We managed to arrest him before he could sexually abuse the girl,” said Julieth Matechi.

The Mbeya region anti-graft boss said the suspect will be arraigned with soliciting sexual favours from a minor.
