Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was involved in a road accident on Friday night (June 5).

The 9:05pm accident happened at Kapsaret Fly-over, when the senator was driving to Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County from Nandi.

A senior police officer in the locality, who spoke to K24 Digital on condition of anonymity, termed the crash as “self-involved”.

The senior cop told us that the lawmaker’s vehicle hurtled off the road after he lost control of it.

"It hit a concrete barrier while careening off the road," he said.

Cherargei, who was alone in the car, escaped the crash with minor injuries, and was taken to the nearby St. Luke's Orthopaedic & Trauma Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

K24 Digital understands that the senator is recuperating at his Elgon View home located on the southern side of Eldoret. Our phone calls to him went unanaswered.

The mangled wreckage of Cherargei's car, a Toyota Landcruiser Prado TX, was towed to Langas Police Station.

It remains unclear how the former Senate JLAC chairperson managed to flout the 7pm-5am curfew.

Cherargei was among the Rift Valley leaders, who joined Deputy President William Ruto at Kapsisiywa Village, where the DP had gone to seek “blessings” from Talai elders, the scions of legendary Nandi leader Koitalel arap Samoei.

The DP’s “cleansing” ceremony that was organised by the Nandi Laibons Council of Elders lasted two hours -- from 5am to 7am Friday.

The elders, popularly known as Orkoik, held prayers and offered sacrifices on a nearby hill. They included Christopher arap Agui, Lawrence Nganai, and Stephen arap Tormoi.
