A section of leaders in Trans Nzoia has raised concerns over stringent measures put in place to address the spread of Covid-19 cases saying it will destabilize marriages.

Led by Saboti Member of parliament Caleb Hamisi, the leader said the new measures will strain the already fragile family ties.

“Most of the locals work in West Pokot and Uasin Gishu counties and the idea of tightening the covid 19 preventive measures will injure most of the marriages that are already on the brink of collapsing due to long-distance relationship,” Hamisi said.

He also added that the measures will lead to social vices among the locals residing in slums due to lack of social spaces.

Hamisi has also complained that the measures were only enforced in slum areas.

“Saboti has several slums including Kipsongo, Tuwani and Matisi with a lot of youths undertaking their activities between 7, 8 and 9 pm before proceeding to watch football at ten now you are confining them in their houses what do you expect from them,” Hamisi wondered.

For now, the first-time legislator has asked the national government to look into ways of mitigating the spiralling numbers of Covid-19 adding that locking down the counties will worsen the situation instead of reducing the numbers.

“Rural counties are unique from counties like Nairobi we could be bringing more harm than good to our people including mass divorce cases.”
