President William Ruto is today, October 25, 2022, set to launch the Soweto B social housing program in Kibera, Nairobi county.

The Head of State will be accompanied by officials from the state department of housing and urban development during the launch.

Residents set to benefit from the program will pay rent for as low as Ksh2,400. The program is part of the housing pledges he made to his supporters during the campaign period.

"President William Ruto will shortly launch the construction of 4,054 units for former slum dwellers in the Kibera Soweto B Social Housing Project," Statehouse spokesman Hussein Mohammed wrote on his Twitter account.

"The project offers residents the opportunity to become house owners through affordable ‘rent-to-own’ program from as low as Ksh 2400 per month,"

The program will also benefit local manufacturers and Jua Kali artisans who will equip constructors with construction materials.

"Local manufacturers & Jua Kali sector to provide various construction materials, as the Government seeks to turn the housing challenge into an economic opportunity and spur job creation," Mohammed added.

Housing gap

The head of state had earlier revealed that Kenya is currently experiencing a housing gap of two million units and his government intends to bridge it by 2027.

"Our target is to increase the supply fourfold from 50,000 to 200,000 per year. Already, 2,592 units have been completed, 40,452 are under construction and over 500,000 units that require financial backstopping and funding for bulk infrastructure are in the pipeline," he said.
