Six people were killed and 10 seriously injured in an accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a truck on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on Saturday night.

Five died on the spot when the Nairobi-bound matatu and the truck collided head-on at Nyakairu centre, a few kilometres from Naivasha town. The sixth died while undergoing treatment at Naivasha sub-county hospital. The truck driver was among those killed.

A witness said the collision happened as the matatu driver attempted to overtake several vehicles.

Naivasha deputy OCPD John Kwasa urged motorists to be cautious and adhere to traffic rules.

Careless driving

Naivasha East MCA Stanley Karanja asked the government to erect speed bumps at the area to reduce accidents. “It’s a sad day that we have lost six people in this accident which could have been avoided,” he said.

Naivasha Road Safety Association chairman James Kabono attributed the accident to careless driving and called for the deployment of traffic officers to man the black spots on the highway.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam along the busy highway, with police having a hectic time trying to ease the congestion.
