The death toll from Nithi River bus accident has risen to 33 after nine more bodies were retrieved from the wreckage, Eastern Regional Commissioner Evans Achoki said on Monday, July 25.

The driver of the Modern Coast bus lost control of the vehicle, plunging into the river along the Meru - Mombasa highway on Sunday evening.

Achoki said nine other people have been hospitalised at Chuka County Referral Hospital and PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital and they are in critical condition.

"We are currently trying to remove the wreckage from the river bank," he said.

Bus lost control

According to eyewitnesses, the 43-seater bus lost control at the black spot and plunged into the river at around 6:30 pm.

The accident happened barely a month after a 14-seater matatu plunged into the Nithi bridge claiming one and leaving 13 others with serious injuries.

Last year five others died on the same spot after a lorry collided with a matatu in the deadly black spot.
