President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated retired KDF Colonel Alfred Mshimba and Monica Wanjiru to fill in positions at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission that fell vacant upon resignation of ex-commissioners.

In an announcement read by the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi on Wednesday, October 6, the head of state asked the parliament to vet the duo that were part of a larger group of 21 short-listed candidates for the vacant slots.

The appointments come after the resignation of commissioner Dabar Abdi Malim and his colleague Rose Macharia. The two tendered their resignation letters to the President on September 1, 2021.

Retired Colonel Alfred Mshimba joins the growing list of retired and active military men that the President has considered for civilian jobs.

Ex-military men currently serving in government institutions include former Chief of Defence Forces General (Rtd) Samson Mwathethe, who chairs the KenGen board, and ex-KDF soldier Twalib Mubarak, the current EACC CEO. Nairobi Metropolitan Services boss Major General Mohamed Badi is also currently an active officer at the Kenya Air Force.

The President has often defended the appointments of military leaders to civil institutions stating that they are efficient in delivery, management and administration.
