Residents told to move as 24 Nakuru dams near overflow

Nakuru County has warned residents in Rongai,Naivasha and Gilgil sub counties to be on alert as 24 dams tipped to overflow.

The county’s department of disaster management and humanitarian assistance asked residents living on the water paths and near the dams to move to safer ground.

 Department’s Chief Officer Ann Njenga warned that residents living along the water paths and dams should clear and move to safer grounds so as to reduce destruction and loss of property and lives within the county. 

Speaking the department’s Chief Officer, Ann Njenga, said that over 24 dams within the county are full and they have deployed staff to monitor the dams.

Some of the dams that are already full, include Nyondia in Naivasha, Jika in Mbaruk, and Gilgil and Visoi in Rongai.

Ms Njenga said the county has spent over Sh2 million to expand water paths and ensure flooded areas are drained.

Gilgil Ward representative, Ms Jane Wambui, lauded the disaster management unit saying it has done a commendable job so far.
