A train that was headed to Nanyuki was on Wednesday, September 22 involved in an accident after it crashed with a lorry that was ferrying crates of sodas.

The accident according to sources happened at a level crossing which is located in Karatina, Nyeri County.

Witnesses took advantage of the incident and made away with hundreds of crates of sodas while others watched from a distance.

However, witnesses say that the truck driver and the turn boy are safe from any dangers.

Peter Mburu, said that the train which was ferrying fuel hit the truck from the rear side.

“The truck was stuck at the rails of the train when it was hit. People took advantage and started taking the bottles of soda and crates,” he said.

Another witness John Gacheru said that police took long before they could arrive at the scene.

“It is for that reason that the looters took most of the crates of soda taking advantage of the situation,” Gacheru said.

Situation was calmed when police officers arrived at the scene.

This is not the first time such an incident is happening. In June, a train travelling from Nanyuki to Nairobi caught fire in Kabuta, Kiharu.

The fire according to Kenya Railways Corporation management was caused by an electric fault in the engine.

One year ago, a person died after a train that plies the Embakassi- Nairobi CBD route rammed into a truck in Donholm.

The truck driver died on the spot.

The train was headed from the CBD to Pipeline Estate when the accident happened.

In a recent report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) road accidents have been on the increase.
