Several residents of Nyakoe Ward in Kitutu Chache South, Kisii County held prayers at Nyanguru Catholic church for thieves who have been vandalizing Kenya Power transformers and stealing electric wires, leaving them in darkness.

Ward Representative, John Amisi also appealed to other legislators in the county to join in prayers to end the vice and challenged residents to be vigilant in the fight.

“It is sad that while the government wants every family to have electricity, other people are hell-bent to vandalize the equipment and leave residents in darkness,” Amisi told the press after a mass celebration.

Kenya Power Security officer in charge of South Nyanza, Mang’era Moronge said vandalizing of transformers and theft of wires was rampant in the county, warning that perpetrators will soon be nabbed and prosecuted.

The security officer said people arrested with the company’s wires and equipment will be fined Ksh1million and be jailed for a year or both, stressing the theft was hampering connectivity of power in the area.

“Vandals steal wires and meters and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. I urge residents not to buy them and instead follow the right channels to get connected to electricity,” Moronge stated.

The officer urged residents to buy meters from the Company and report unscrupulous people who were selling stolen meters for action to be taken against them.

He appealed to residents to hire qualified and licensed electricians to do wiring in their buildings and shun quacks that do shoddy work and risk their lives.

Further, he cautioned vandals against playing with the transformers which have high voltage power warning that they risked being electrocuted.
