Pertinent questions have emerged after police in Kisumu failed to arrest four robbers who engaged the officers in a siege during a robbery of the Equity bank branch on Angawa Avenue.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, November 23, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Mugu Mutindika said the robbers disguised themselves as clients in order to avoid arrest.

“We have in our possession a man’s shirt. We suspect that the robbers had a change of clothes and left the banking hall during the evacuation of distressed clients,” the Regional Commissioner said.

According to sources privy to the Tuesday morning theft, the robbers entered the bank’s hall at around 11 am and threw tear gas canisters inside the banking hall which caused a commotion.

Mutundika said a contingent of officers got to the scene about half an hour after the robbery began but failed to arrest the robbers who hurled teargas canisters at them.

The Nyanza Regional commissioner further stated that efforts by police to nab the suspected robbers failed, leading to a four-hour siege before officers gained entry into the banking hall where clients and the robbers who were holed up during the siege were.

However, questions on how and where the robbers got the tear gas canisters used during the robbery are unanswered with police stating that the tear gas used by the robbers do not belong to them adding that investigations into the matter have already been launched.
