Police officers in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County have recovered an AK-47 assault rifle fully loaded with rounds of ammunition that was hidden inside Kitale Club forest.

Confirming the incident, Trans Nzoia County police commander Jecinta Wesonga said a pressed man who had gone to ease himself found the firearm protruding from a tree branch wrapped in a black paper bag.

"We were called by Kitale club manager who informed us that a good Samaritan who had gone to ease himself had seen a firearm in the forest. We rushed there with the scene of crime officers who confirmed it is an AK-47 rifle," Wesonga confirmed.

Wesonga said the rifle is still serviceable and that police have launched investigations to find the owner of the gun.

"The firearm whose magazine is fully loaded is still in good condition. We shall conduct investigations to know the owner," she added.

The county police boss called on the members of the public to volunteer any information that could lead to the arrest of the illegal firearm holder.

"While we appreciate the good Samaritan for reporting the matter, we would also like to urge our good peace-loving people to give us any information that they might be having as far as this gun is concerned," Wesonga pleaded.

She said the presence of such illegal weapons in the community poses a huge security threat in the community since they can be used to rob and murder people.

It is yet to be established whether the firearm is the one that has been used to rob business people at night in various places across the county.

Over four cases of murder and robbery with violence have been reported in Trans Nzoia County from mid this year.
