President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, April 25, announced that the Government has so far identified 108, 000 vulnerable households, which are receiving the weekly stipend to cushion them against economic hardship wrought by coronavirus crisis.

On April 16, the Head of State announced that his administration had begun identifying needy families in Nairobi, who would receive the weekly stipend.

President Kenyatta said the government had -- starting April 15 -- scouted for vulnerable families, and by April 16, the State had already identified households in Nairobi to receive that week’s support fund.

The president did not reveal the criteria the State used, or relies on, to settle on the needy families that receive financial aid from the government.

And in his address on Saturday, April 25, besides announcing an extension of the 21-day travel ban and 7pm to 5am curfew by another 21 days, the president said beginning Wednesday, April 29, the State will roll out jobs to at least 26, 100 workers, who will be tasked with manufacturing face masks.

The persons given the jobs come from 23 informal settlements across twelve counties that are hardest-hit by coronavirus.

Out of the 26, 100-plus workers, 4, 048 are tailors, said the president.

“They have been tasked to produce 250, 000 face masks a day,” he said.

The Head of State said the jobs were issued under the national hygiene programme, which targets to benefit at least 100, 000 youth by the time the scheme enters Phase Two.
