A female police officer based in Nairobi County was on Thursday charged with receiving Sh130, 000 bribe while she was serving at the Industrial Area Police Station two years ago.

Constable Gladys Cherono who is currently attached to the Kamukunji Police Station appeared before Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti at the Anti- Corruption Court in Nairobi.

The officer, who was arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officers on Wednesday, May 27, denied the corruption charge.

After pleading not guilty, the magistrate freed her on a bond of Sh150, 000 cash bail or Sh300, 000 bond with a similar surety.

The prosecution alleged that the officer solicited the Sh100,000 bribe on October 5, 2018, from Martin Gitau Mburu to facilitate the release of two suspects from the Industrial Area Police Station.

The suspects, Robert Njuki and Gibson Ngige, were arrested over the theft of a vehicle.

The prosecution also told the court that the policewoman received another Sh30,000 from the same Mburu to free the alleged thieving duo.

The case will be mentioned on June 25, 2020.
