A city-based police officer on Saturday night shot himself dead after he was cornered by his colleagues moments after he shot dead a policewoman outside Kamukunji Police Station.
Lawrence Ewoi, attached to the Quick Response Unit, team within Starehe Sub-County, shot himself dead using a G3 rifle at Gate B of Kamukunji Police station.
This happened hours after he shot dead Mourine Anyango, a female officer, outside the same police station and injured another officer identified as George Gitonga during an indiscriminate shooting caused by a disagreement over undisclosed issues.
Mr Gitonga is admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
As Anyango was being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, Ewoi (her killer) fled from the station towards Shauri Moyo police station.
However, a team of sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Kenya Police officers traced the suspect through “Shauri Moyo, Industrial area, Muthurwa, Country bus and pounced on him at Kamukunji police station around gate B.”
“The suspect was confronted by officers but he started firing towards officers who returned fire and the suspect was shot on the leg. He later shot himself and died on the spot before officers could arrest him,” a police report filed at Kamukunji police station read in part.
His body was later taken to City mortuary at midnight by police officers from the station.
It remains unclear why Ewoi shot dead Ms Anyango but investigations are ongoing.
