Police in Tharaka Nithi county on Sunday, May 28, 2023, opened fire at a white Toyota Sienta being driven by a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier after it failed to stop at a roadblock.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, Police Constable (PC) Davis Kamunde fired at the Toyota Sienta after the driver failed to heed his command to stop the vehicle.

Kamude said he flagged down the Sienta on receiving information from one Willy Kiema that there was a motor vehicle suspected to be ferrying aliens.

The officer laid an improvised roadblock using stones upon receiving the information from Kiema.

Kamude suspected that the Sienta was the vehicle ferrying the foreign nationals when he flagged it down and it failed to stop, prompting him to open fire at it when it failed to stop at his improvised roadblock.

13-year-old Charity Kathure, a class eight pupil at Mitunguu Primary School and who was one of the occupants of the Toyota Sienta, was hit by a bullet in her right thigh.

Police officers from Marimanti police station rushed to the scene and established that the Sienta was being driven by Dennis Mutembei Makembo - a KDF soldier from Embakasi Garrison.

The KDF soldier was carrying eight members of his family and was driving from Nkondi heading to Mitunguu direction.

The 13-year-old who was hit by the bullet was rushed to Marimanti Level IV hospital where she was treated and discharged in a fair condition.

The other occupants escaped unhurt.

During the incident, the officers expended three rounds of 9mm from scorpion rifle s/no KE kp b440424. The rifle was confiscated and kept as an exhibit.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Tharaka South are handling the investigations.
