Worry as police recover pistol, ammunition after intercepting vehicle in Meru

Police officers in Igembe, Meru County, on Saturday, July 30, recovered a mini pistol with one live ammunition and a used cartridge from a motor vehicle.

The officers acting on a tip-off intercepted the white Toyota Belta and discovered that the driver of the vehicle was a teacher identified as Patrick Kimathi Kabui attached to Nkamanthi Primary School.

The firearm and the ammunition had been concealed in a blue carrier bag and hidden under the seat of the vehicle.

“Upon a thorough search in the white Toyota Belta vehicle, the police found a min pistol make Esekol P29 S/no EP200920881 with one live ammunition and another used cartridge of unknown calibre in the pistol magazine concealed in a blue carrier bag under a seat of the vehicle,” the police report seen by K24 Digital stated.

Police confiscate recovered items

The officers confiscated the recovered firearm and ammunition which will be used as an exhibit.

They are yet to find another vehicle, a Toyota Caldina with a registration KBW 244D which is alleged to have also been carrying firearms.

This comes two weeks after a senior police officer was arrested in Meru County after his juniors claimed he could not account for a firearm he was given to be used as an exhibit.

The two junior officers had recovered the pistol from a murder suspect Duncan Murangi.

“The suspect was booked at the station vide OB No. 05/20/07/2022 as a suspect of robbery with violence by No. 79909 PC James Kanampiu under the instructions of the OCS but the issue of the firearm exhibit was not mentioned anywhere," the police report read in part.

The police further conducted a search in his house and recovered Ksh220,100 but the firearm was not found.

Sambu is a former 400M sprinter and he won a Gold Medal for Kenya in July 2003 in Nairobi.
