Police in Nandi County have launched a manhunt for a cop who raped a female prisoner in one of the offices at Kaimosi Police Station on Sunday, July 17.

The victim had, on July 14, been arrested for the offence of child stealing and was detained at the station.

While the station commander was on a routine cells visit, the victim informed him of what had happened.

“The OCS immediately took her to the office and upon interrogation, she stated that the officer walked in the cell alone and told her that she was being called by the OCS, leaving behind the other three female prisoners.

“While armed with a rifle he immediately turned against her and ordered her to enter in a room next to the report office and forcefully removed her trouser and raped her,” police said in statement.

The officer, who has since gone missing, then returned the woman to the cells after some hours but warned that he would kill her should she reveal what happened.

“It was later established that the suspect was Constable Samuel Wanyonyi, who was a report office personnel and who took advantage after his colleague left the office briefly to attend to her sick child,” police said.

The victim was rushed to the hospital for examination and treatment and was later issued with a police medical examination report, the P3 Form.

Police officer charged with rape

Last month, a Police Constable attached to Ukwala Police Station in Siaya County was charged in court after he allegedly raped a woman inside a holding cell at Sega Police Post.

The offence, according to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), was committed on April 12, 2021.

The woman had been arrested for not wearing a mask and upon her release, claimed to have been sexually assaulted at the station.

"On the strength of our investigation, it was recommended to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) that Police Constable Cosmas Chirchir be charged with the sexual offence," said IPOA chairperson Anne Makori in a statement.

IPOA had in the past also warned that such cases required thorough probes to establish what actually transpired.

In one of the cases IPOA vindicated a police Constable based at the Kikuyu police station who had been accused of rape in 2014.
