A Police officer based at Ugunja station has been charged with the murder of a man he assaulted in February 2019.

The officer, Constable Vincent Langat, was arrested on Monday, June 20, following investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

He was taken to the Kisii Police station after the IPOA and Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) recommendations in April this year.

“Vincent Langat was today arrested for the offence of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code. This is after an inquiry by IPOA in Ramasha police station, Masaba south sub-county,” the police report reads in parts.

His arrest came after he was accused of assaulting Charles Onditi Omwancha on February 19, 2019, at, Ramasha trading centre in Kisii County. It is said that the officer physically assaulted the deceased, leaving him with injuries that led to his demise.

The turn out of events prompted an independent criminal probe by the police oversight body.
