Police officer accidentally shoots dead colleague after scuffle with lorry driver who was resisting arrest

A police officer manning a mobile weighbridge along Ngong-Suswa road accidentally shot dead her colleague during a scuffle with a motorist who had refused to heed their order.

According to a police report filed at Ngong Police Station, a team of security and weighbridge officers gave the lorry driver a chase using a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin car when he defied their directive.

Upon reaching Kimuka trading centre, the driver stopped and began reversing his lorry to hit their vehicle resulting in a scuffle that saw Police Constable Emma Sopiato shoot her colleague Fanuel Abongo.

“The driver of the said lorry on being flanked to stop he defied the order and instead reversed to hit the occupants, that during the commotion, Emma who was seated at the back right of the driver discharged her riffle an AK 47 S/NO 4915784. which hit NO.95790 CPL Fanuel Abongo a colleague on the right side of ribs and exited through the left side of ribs,” The police OB report reads.

The victim was rushed to Ngong Sub County Hospital where he was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment. He was pronounced dead on arrival at KNH.

Emma, who reported the incident, was in the company of weighbridge manager Christopher Ochieng, their driver and the deceased.
