Police in Kisumu on Thursday gunned down one suspected armed robber who refused to surrender after being cornered.

The alleged incident took place at Kondele roundabout near Fabrique bar and restaurant in Kisumu County.

Confirming the incident, Kondele OCS Peter Kirui said they were alerted by private guards who were manning Kondele post office and the adjacent stalls.

It is alleged that the deceased identified as Walter Odhiambo in company of two others drew a pistol and confronted the guards.

The police boss informed us that the guards scampered for safety and alerted officers on patrol, who responded promptly and challenged the armed robbers to surrender, but however refused.

"The gang refused to surrender, and the deceased drew a knife and charged towards the officers,” he said.

He added that warning shots were fired to scare him, but he charged towards one of the officers, prompting the other officers to shoot him in order to subdue.

The armed robber succumbed to his wounds and upon search by the detectives a knife was recovered, however, the duo whom the deceased were with managed to flee away.

Sleuths present at the scene moved the body of the deceased to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination to be conducted.
