Police shot a man who attempted to rob Equity bank, Nairobi West branch on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

The man stabbed two guards and a customer before police in the bank opened fire and shot him.

Langata police OCPD Monica Kimani said preliminary findings show that the attacker wanted to steal money from the bank.

The lone assailant is reported to have walked into the bank after he stabbed the security guard at the bank entrance while being searched before gaining access to the banking hall.

"A middle-aged man while being searched by the security guard at the entrance withdrew a knife and stabbed the said officer before gaining access to the counter," the OCPD stated.

She noted that the middle-aged man was asked by the officers manning the bank to drop the knife and surrender but he refused and started charging at them.

It was at this point that one of the officers shot at the assailant managing to disarm him.

The three who were injured were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital where they are admitted to receive treatment in stable condition.

The assailant was also rushed to Mbagathi hospital where he is receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the man was only after obtaining money.

The OCPD revealed that the assailant had also gone to the Operations Manager's office and threatened her making her raise an alarm and making the officers act quickly.

"Our preliminary investigation as we got from the assailant himself is that he wanted to get cash. He wanted to get cash from the bank," she added.

The police have launched investigations to establish if the assailant was alone or was in the company of others.
