Western Kenya region Police Commander Peris Kimani has called on the outgoing Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malalah to surrender to the nearest police station to answer to assault charges.

Kimani said Malala resisted arrest on Thursday, September 1 after locking himself inside his home in Kakamega town.

She said Malala was reported to have been involved in violence on Monday, August 29 during the election of Kakamega governor.

"17 cases were reported to us concerning complaints of misdeeds during the elections. Malala was the accused in four of them," she said.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers on September 1, 2022, raided the home of Malala on allegations of engaging in election malpractices during the just concluded Kakamega gubernatorial elections.

The DCI linked Malala with the chaos that erupted during the elections after a case of OB number 32/29/8/2022 reported by one Susan Akinyi Omondi, an ODM agent at Muliro Gardens polling station, who accused the outgoing senator of leading a group of about 30 men that assaulted her after claiming she was bribing voters.

She reported the matter to the Kakamega Central Police Station after sustaining bruises on both hands and claiming she had lost Ksh6000 that was in her jacket.

Malala's parents, led by his father Mejja Malala, who came after they were informed of the raid angrily confronted the officers, accusing the outgoing Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and the Governor-elect Fernandez Barasa of having a hand in the arrest.
