Police officers on Wednesday, June 22 arrested six suspects in Bridgestone and Colombia areas along the Mathare River for drug peddling, drug abuse, and illegal gambling activities.

Led by Starehe Deputy County Commissioner and Mathare Police Station OCS, the officers conducted a raid in the areas after getting a tip-off that the area had become a hub of peddling drugs and gambling.

“Six suspects were apprehended as others managed to evade arrest conducted in a raid conducted at Bridgestone and Colombia areas along Mathare River.

"The areas had become a hub of drug peddling, drug abuse, and illegal gambling activities,” National Police Service said in a statement.

The aim of the raid was to dismantle the dens which had become a nuisance in the neighborhoods.

Others managed to escape while the officers only managed to arrest the six.

The police officers recovered one kilogram of heroin, five kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, and illicit brew.

The dens also harbored several needles, alcohol pads, daggers, and NSP Kits.

Notably, a gambling machine was also recovered.

"Such vices such as gambling and drug abuse which are very common in our neighborhoods erode the society.

"The National Police Service discourages the public, especially the youth from engaging in them because it is then that criminal activities arise," Sirengo stated.

Cases of drug abuse have been on the rise recently and there have been persistent efforts by the police to nab the peddlers and users.
