Police on Tuesday afternoon arrested a 34-year-old mason who is believed to have murdered a Kenya Medical and Training College (KMTC) student in Homabay town.

Detectives who have been trailing the suspect since Sunday when the lifeless body of Emily Chepkemboi was found lying in a pool of blood on her bed, managed to arrest the man.

According to Homabay Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Monica Berege, the suspect who was nabbed in his home within Homabay town was the last to contact the deceased.

"He is currently being grilled by detectives who want to find out whether he had a hand in the murder of the lady," Ms Berege told K24 Digital.

She said that the suspect will be arraigned in court on Wednesday and that police will seek to hold him for 14 more days.

A pathologist who conducted an autopsy on Chepkemboi said that she died due to suffocation and that she had stabbed wounds on her head and arms.

There was also no sign of rape as per the results that were released on Tuesday morning.

The student was found dead on Sunday evening by neighbours who were disturbed by a foul smell that was emanating from her house.

They then hoped to open the door only to find her lifeless body lying on the bed.

Neighbours said that she was last seen walking into her single room never to leave again but they doubted whether she was around.

Her family said that they tried to reach her over the weekend in vain.
