At least 30 people have committed suicide in the last two months in Nyeri County with Mukurweini Sub County topping the list of sub counties with the highest suicide cases, police data has revealed.
Nyeri county commander Adiel Nyange has said that out 30 suicide cases, 25 are male accounting to 83 percent while five are female.
"From June 1 up to now we have had 30 cases. Out of 30, 25 are men and five cases are women. Statistics reveal that 83 percent are men while 17 percent are women." Nyange said.

Due to the increased suicide cases, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has begun chaplaincy and counselling services which the county commander said will help to research on why many men have been committing suicide in Nyeri.
"We have launched a data collection campaign in order to know what exactly is happening in the community with the assistance of the Chaplaincy and counselling we will move out to collect data in order to establish the reason behind these suicide cases especially among men." He noted.
The Nyeri police boss has decried the rising cases of rape and defilement saying that many of those cases are committed by close relatives.
Around 60 to 70 percent cases of rape and defilement that are reported are connected to relatives. We want to caution parents to be sure of the characters and morals of the relatives they entrust their children with,” the police boss said.
At the same time PCEA head Reverend Thegu Mutahi has urged well-wishers and the government to come in handy and arrest the desperate situation among Kenyans.
Mutahi who is the Church’s 23rd General Assembly Moderator said that effects of Covid-19 have rendered many jobless leaving them with nothing to meet their basic needs.
He said that the support by well- wishers and some financial support by government may save many from the path of death, being opted by many who think that this the only solution.
