One person has been confirmed dead after an accident occurred at a goldmine in Kachola Buoro village in Bondo sub-county.

Didan Onyango Michura, 43, died when a rock from the mineshaft hit his head, killing him on the spot.

According to Edwin Ooro who was working in the same spot, there were four miners in the 30-meter deep mine when the accident occurred.

"Michura was in the process of climbing out of the mine when he met his death,"Ooro disclosed to K24 Digital.

Bondo Township Chief Walter Omolo confirmed the incident.

"I received a distress call from the area Assistant Chief and on rushing to the scene I found the body had already been retrieved from the deep mine," Omolo said.

Omolo further said that the gold miners in the area were operating illegally after the government stopped their operation.

The body of the deceased has been moved to Bondo hospital mortuary.

The incident has left the locals in shock and in a sombre mood with most of them calling for action from relevant authorities

The accident comes barely two weeks after 8 miners were trapped at Abimbo goldmine in the same region.

Six people were rescued, while one remains trapped in the 300ft-deep shaft. One was retrieved lifeless from the mine.
