The Orange Democratic Movement Party (ODM) says it has endorsed a plan to impeach Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who is facing corruption charges in court.

“Due to corruption charges levelled against Governor Okoth Obado and the decision by the court to bar him from accessing his office, the party in consultations with County MCAs has resolved to have a motion of impeachment against the governor initiated immediately and have the Deputy Governor [Nelson Mahanga] take over,” ODM tweeted on Tuesday evening (September 1).

Obado, his four children and cronies are accused of embezzling Ksh73.5 million belonging to the taxpayer.

Thirty seven of the 41 ODM MCAs from Migori County on Tuesday attended the party’s meeting, which resolved to remove Obado from office.

Obado won re-election bid on an ODM ticket in the August 8, 2017 general election. He competed in the May 2017 party primaries against the current Migori Senator Ochillo Ayacko.

Obado is believed to have fallen out of favour with the ODM leadership following his close ties with Deputy President William Ruto.
