A National Youth Service (NYS) recruit was on Monday, November 30 charged with stealing alcoholic drinks worth Ksh25.6 million.

John Gatuiku Macharia is accused of stealing 1,840 units of Konyagi, 3,534 units of Faxe and 176 units of Turbong and 788 units of Redbull from Patiala Distillers Limited.

The alcoholic products were under storage in a go-down, where the suspect, with others not before court, allegedly accessed and stole them. The said-theft happened between January 1, 2018 and November 23, 2020.

The accused was also charged with handling stolen goods.

The court was told that on November 27, 2020 while in Kenol, Murang’a County, Macharia was in possession of the alcohol, yet he allegedly knew that it had been stolen.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges before Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku.

The accused was freed on a Ksh500,000 cash bail after claiming he was due to sit exams this December.
