Kisumu governor Anyang' Nyong'o has demanded the arrest of the police officer who fired and killed a third-year Maseno University student during the Azimio protests on Monday, March 20, 2023.

The deceased, William Mayange a third-year student at Maseno University had joined a group of students who protested on Monday. He died after he was shot in the neck.

In a statement, the county boss called out the police for using live ammunition to disperse the students instead of teargas or rubber bullets.

Nyong'o asserted that police should exhibit professionalism and restraint while quelling riots instead of using brutality and unarmed protestors. He subsequently reiterated that the officer responsible should be arrested and prosecuted.

"A trigger-happy police officer today shot and killed a third-year literature student at Maseno University, without any lawful cause,

"The student was murdered in cold blood as he and his colleagues were demonstrating at Maseno center over the cost of living," the statement reads in parts.

He added: "As we send condolence messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible,"

Third-year killed

Mayange had joined other students to protest the high cost of living.

Police officers who were at the scene claimed that the students overpowered them after running out of live ammunition, tear gas canisters and blanks. They claim that they were forced to use live bullets after the students injured six police officers.

One of the bullets hit the deceased in the neck. He died upon arrival at the hospital.
