Nyeri contractor in court over Ksh27M tax evasion case

A Nyeri based contractor is in court over an alleged failure to remit taxes totalling Ksh27,335, 972.

According to a Tuesday, January 18 charge sheet seen by K24 Digital, David Wanjohi Kamani of Sawakal General Contractors Limited is said to have committed the said offence between January 2014 and December 2018.

"On diverse dates between 1 January 2014 and December 31, 2018, within the Republic of Kenya, being the director of Sawakal General Contractors Limited duly registered under Pin No.PO517039F knowingly omitted from your Value Added Tax returns for the financial year 2014 to 2018 amounts totalling Ksh27,335,972," the charge sheet read in part.

Wanjohi was charged with fraud in relation to tax contrary to section 97 (a) of the Tax Procedure Act, 2015 as read with section 104 (3) of the Tax Procedure ACT, 2015.

Wanjohi was released on a cash bail of Ksh1 million. The case will be mentioned on February 1.
