NTSA suspends Modern Coast Bus license, launches probe into Nithi River crash

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the operating license of Modern Coast Bus company after one of the firm's buses was involved in a deadly road accident at Nithi river.

The road safety agency has also ordered a probe into the deadly crash that has so far claimed 33 lives.

The Modern Coast bus heading to Mombasa from Meru was involved in a road accident on Sunday evening.

"A thorough multi-agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operator’s safety operational standards is currently underway," Director General George Njau said in a statement on Monday, July 25.

The NTSA order will affect 31 Modern Coast buses operating within Kenya and in the neighbouring countries.

Modern Coast bus company has since issued a statement following the accident.

Through their social media pages, the company sent condolence messages to the bereaved families and shared contacts through which the victims' families can reach the company.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those injured and undergoing treatment.

"The families and close relatives of the injured and departed souls can reach us on 0741748895," part of the statement read.
