Kirinyaga County Woman Rep Purity Ngirici has been removed as the chairperson of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) by way of acclamation.

After booting out Ngirici, KEWOPA members proposed her Kiambu counterpart Muthoni Wamuchomba as her replacement.

The MPs accused Ngirici of poor leadership citing alleged failure to champion gender issues, chief among the rising teenage pregnancies in wake of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

They said KEWOPA should have been on the forefront of highlight the issue yet Presiden Uhuru Kenyatta was the first to spotlight the problem.

Further, the women MPs said they cannot have a leader who is involved in tearing down female leaders, linking her to the woes facing Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.

Waiguru faced an onslaught from Kirinyaga elected leaders, leading to her impeachment by the ward representatives and falling out with her deputy, Peter Ndambiri.

However, the governor received a reprieve after the Senate cleared her of any wrongdoing.

KEWOPA champions women's issues to be included in the Parliament's agenda.

Recently, the lobby has lent support to the Building Bridges Initiative and President Uhuru Kenyatta's COVID-19 response plan.
