ODM leader Raila Odinga is the latest politician to have a road in Nairobi named after him, following the adoption of a motion tabled in Nairobi County assembly.

Makongeni MCA and Minority Whip Peter Imwatok proposed the renaming of Mbagathi way to Raila Odinga way, a suggestion that was passed and now awaits the county administration to replace the signposts.

It was during the debate in the assembly, a suggestion was put forward to have the same adoration accorded Narc-Kenya party leader and former cabinet minister Martha Karua.

“Let not just rename this road just because it is Raila Odinga, but because he has sacrificed almost 50 years of his life for the good of our country,” Imwatok told the House.

“I am happy that you initiated this process of naming roads to great men and women of our country. I am also expecting a road to be named after Martha Karua in this city” he added.

Since the inception of the county government system in 2013, a number of roads have been renamed after prominent personalities.

Forest road was renamed Prof Wangari Maathai Road in recognition of the late Nobel Laureate.

Cross Road was later renamed Charles Rubia after the late veteran politician.

The road near City Hall Annex was named after late Catholic Archbishop Cardinal Maurice Otunga.

This year City Hall renamed Accra Road after late veteran politician Kenneth Matiba, Kapiti Crescent Road in South B renamed after legendary footballer Joe Kadenge.

Eastleigh’s First Avenue lane was renamed Mohammed Yusuf Haji Avenue in recognition of the late Garissa Senator.

Changing of Dik Dik Road name to Francis Atwoli Road in honour of the Cotu boss was met with fierce street protests.

During his reign as Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero had a road connecting Lang’ata Road from Galleria Mall to Karen named after him.

In Buruburu, the Senator Mike Sonko forced a road signpost erected bearing the names “Sonko Road”.
