A youthful man from Kibra, Nairobi has been charged with raping and robbing a youthful woman from Meru, whom he met on Facebook.

Godfrey Maranga Nyakundi is alleged to have used an Indian name to lure his target, F.K, whom he promised a supermarket attendant job and a monthly salary of Ksh18,000.

The crimes (rape and robbery) happened on February 8, 2021, the Milimani Law Courts was told.

Nyakundi is alleged to have violently robbed F.K. of her mobile phone, an Infinix model, valued at Ksh16,000.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku heard that F.K. on February 4, 2021 logged in to her Facebook Messenger and found a message from a Facebook user called Hanuman Singh, who inquired whether F.K. was in need of a job.

‘Singh’ told F.K. that he would employ her as a supermarket attendant, and would give her a monthly wage of Ksh18,000.

“He did not reveal the name of the supermarket I would be working for,” said F.K. in her court papers.

F.K. said she agreed with ‘Singh’ that she would travel from Meru on February 6, 2021, and upon her arrival in Nairobi, she would be received by Singh’s friend known as Kathure.

F.K. did not manage to travel on February 6, but asked if she could reschedule her travel date to February 8, a request ‘Singh’ accepted.

On her way to Nairobi on February 8, F.K. said she called ‘Singh’, and a lady who introduced herself as Kathure received the call.

When she arrived at Nairobi’s Team Room area, F.K. called the suspect again, who now received the call, but said his name was John.

‘John’ aka ‘Singh’ asked F.K. to board a vehicle to Kibra, where he would meet her.

When F.K. arrived in Kibra, ‘John’ received and took her to a house, where he allegedly raped, assaulted and robbed the complainant of her phone.

F.K. reported the matter at a Kibra police post, and, thereafter, sought treatment at the Kibera South Health Centre.

The suspect, who was upon arrest identified as Godfrey Maranga Nyakundi, and not John or Singh, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and was released on a cash bail of Ksh300,000 or a bond of Ksh500,000.

The accused is expected back in court for mention on March 3, 2021.
