Police in Nairobi are holding a man who allegedly shot at police after he had just been involved in an accident along Enterprise Road located within Industrial Area.

Joseph Mburu, a licensed gun holder was driving his Mercedes Benz on Wednesday night when he hit and injured a pedestrian.

Witnesses say that the driver after realizing his mistake, sped off on the wrong side of the road but he lost control of the car and landed into a ditch a few kilometres from the accident scene.

Police officers who were on duty and guarding various business premises along Enterprise Road rushed towards where the car had landed in a ditch but Mburu began shooting at him.

This forced the police officers to take cover as they asked the suspect to stop shooting.

He shot nine times before he stopped and agreed to share with the officers.

“His gun had a total of 15 rounds of ammunition. He said that he feared he was being attacked by thugs,” James Mugera who is the Nairobi County deputy police commander said.

Cases of misuse of guns in the country have been on the increase. Not only civilians are involved in such but also police officers.

This prompted Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr Fred Matiang’I to intervene and asked the Kenya Firearm Licensing Board to come up with strict regulations.

Dr Matiang’I also said a number of holders were also walking around with fake certificates.

Currently, one has to renew their licenses after every one year.
