A woman has been arrested over the offence of attempting to commit suicide after her husband impregnated her, and allegedly failed to enrol her back to school.

While appearing before Shanzu Principal Magistrate Yusuf Shikanda, Selina Muuria told court that she felt disappointed since her husband failed to keep his promise after she gave birth.

“l wanted to end my life because when l got pregnant, l was in school and my desire was to continue with my education. My husband had promised to take me back to school after l delivered but he has declined to do so and l see a reason to live, “she told the court

The magistrate later ordered the suspect to be released on her own personal bond after listening to her submissions.

He further referred the matter to the probation office for the accused person to undergo counselling.

"My finding is that the suspect is in need of counselling and support as opposed to punishment. As such, I hereby issue orders to have the suspect released," he ruled.

The charges read that on March 25, 2020, at Mtwapa Township in Kilifi South sub-county in the coast region she attempted to commit suicide by hanging herself on a tree using a lesso.

The matter will be mentioned on May 19.
