Governor Alfred Mutua on Monday ordered Edmor Steel Mills shut down following an outcry over pollution by residents of Syokimau estate in Mavoko, Machakos County.

Dr. Mutua said the move was informed by the need to safeguard the lives of locals who have been experiencing respiratory ailments associated with air pollution emanating from the factory.

The governor said that the factory will remain shut until air pollution was stopped and clean production procedures adhered to.

“Occupational health and safety standards and protocols must also be put in place to the satisfaction of the National Environment Management Authority (Nema)," said the Machakos County boss.

Further, Mutua also directed the company to provide adequate sanitation and handwashing facilities and also adhere to Covid-19 public health regulations.

Earlier, the governor received personal protective equipment (PPEs) worth Sh3.8 million from the Equity Group Foundation which was presented by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr. James Mwangi, at a brief ceremony held at Machakos Level V Hospital.
