Residents of Mururi Village in Mwea, Kirinyaga County woke up to a rude shock Friday when they discovered three bodies floating in River Nyamindi.

The bodies of two men and a woman were seen by a female resident who had gone to the river to fetch water at 7am.

Residents rushed to the scene after the woman raised the alarm.

Local divers managed to retrieve bodies of the two men, but refused to remove that of the woman, saying they wanted the police to pay them Ksh7, 000 before undertaking the exercise.

The neck of one of the victims was almost cut off from his body, whereas the other man had his head smashed by a blunt object.

Police believe the victims were tortured before being killed, and their bodies dumped into the river.

A resident, Michael Chombo, told K24 Digital that River Nyamindi has become notorious for the dumping of murder victims.

“Every month, police retrieve from the river at least one body of a murder victim,” said Chombo.

Chombo said residents believe the woman’s body, which is yet to be recovered, remained immersed in the river for at least one week.

The retrieved bodies of the two men were taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital morgue.

Residents say they are not familiar with the deceased, therefore, believing they could have been killed elsewhere and their bodies thrown into the river.

Mwea East OCPD, John Onditi, confirmed the incident, saying investigations into the mysterious deaths have commenced.
