A Neo Kenya Mpya bus was today involved in a grisly road accident near Mukuyu area, Murang'a county after it overturned as it was ferrying students from Gititu mixed secondary in Murang’a.
According to reports, several students were injured after the vehicle overturned at a sharp corner a few moments after departing from the school.
Makuyu police boss Alexander Shikondi on Tuesday, December 14, confirmed the incident and revealed that the bus driver perished on the spot.
"We can confirm indeed the bus was involved in the morning accident and the driver died on the spot, but the students are in stable condition after being rushed to nearby hospitals," Shikondi said.
Shikondi further stated that six students were treated and discharged from the Makuyu sub-county hospital, where they had been rushed for treatment.
An additional six students were treated and discharged, while one is admitted with a fractured hand at the Kenol hospital.
The vehicle has since been towed to the Makuyu police station.
With Kenya Mpya buses previously involved in multiple accidents, a section of Kenyans have called on the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) to rein in on the SACCO behind the vehicles.
