A traffic police officer died after being run over by a motorist in Nyali, Mombasa, on Monday, February 27, 2023.

A police report seen by K24 Digital indicates that Police Constable Julius Marwa had stopped a motor vehicle — Toyota Ractis registration number KDD 986D — for a traffic check at Buxton junction when the tragedy struck.

The police officer is said to have asked the driver of the vehicle identified as Osman Jama Abdi to turn off the engine to allow him to conduct a normal traffic check but he declined.

The action of the motorist prompted the officer to open the driver's door with intent to turn off the ignition but unexpectedly the driver grabbed the officer's hand and tried to pull him inside the vehicle before speeding off while the officer's feet were dragging on the tarmac for about 200 metres.

"Shortly after, the officer was pushed out of the moving vehicle and he was run over by the rear right wheel," the report reads in part.

The officer sustained a serious head injury and multiple fractures on the pelvic.

He was rushed to Jocham Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was moved to the same hospital's mortury pending postmortem.

Police officers who visited the scene led by Makupa OCS launched investigations into the incident and the vehicle involved in the incident was later traced at a basement parking within Beach Road estate in Nyali.

The driver was found having locked himself inside the vehicle and was immediately arrested and taken into custody for interrogation.

Meanwhile, the vehicle was towed to Makupa Police station awaiting further police action.
