More details emerge after bus plunged into river, killing several wedding-bound choir members in Kitui

At least 18 lives have been lost in a tragic road accident that occurred on Saturday, December 4 after a school bus plunged into River Enziu in Kitui County, the Deputy Governor has confirmed.

Speaking to a reporter of a local TV station, Kitui Deputy Governor Wanze Nzau said that rescue operations are ongoing adding that three of the passengers in the ill fated bus who were on their way to a wedding have since been rescued and are receiving medical attention at Mwingi Level Four Hospital.

In a video footage seen by K24 Digital, the driver of the bus was crossing a flooded bridge when the vehicle he was driving was overpowered by the waters tripping into the river with passengers on board.

"Watu wale waliokolewa wakiwa hai ni watu kumi na tatu na washakimbizwa mpaka Mwingi Level Four Hospital na sahii tushatoa mwili kumi na nane," the DG said.

The Deputy Governor further stated that the fire brigade from Kitui County are working to retrieve the bus from the river.

The bus belonging to St. Joseph Seminary School in Mwingi was moving from Mwingi town to Nuu ferrying church choir members.

Confirming the incident, Mwingi East OCPD Joseph Yakan revealed that the school bus had approximately 50 passengers on board at the time of the incident.
