A Mombasa politician is fighting for his life at the Agakhan hospital after a failed assassination attempt following a shooting incident by unknown gunmen in Tudor.

Ali Mwatsau's car was sprayed with more than 15 bullets, and he is believed to have escaped death narrowly after a Tuk Tuk driver rushed him to the hospital.

Coast Region's Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss, Washington Njiru said that police were yet to establish the motive of the gunmen and investigations had begun.

Mwatsau is a Mvita MP aspirant on UDA ticket.

Njiru noted that a manhunt for the unknown number of gunmen that were being ferried using two cars is ongoing and detectives were still gathering more information to enable them close in on the suspects.

"The scene has already been attended to by scenes of crime officers and the victim has been rushed to hospital as investigations continue," he said.

According to a police report, the shooting happened at 10:00 pm on Tuesday.

The report further reveals that the gunmen sped off after the incident.

"Following the shooting incident, the victim sustained gunshot wounds on his arms, legs and is undergoing treatment, " part of the report reads.

He was driving from a mosque to his house at the time of the incident.
