Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, rescued fishermen who went missing after their vessel was swept away by strong winds and currents.

In a press release, the four only identified as Baraka, Brian, Fahadhi and Baya had embarked on a deep-sea fishing expedition on November 30, 2023, and were expected to return to Ngomeni, Malindi in Kilifi County on December 2, 2023.

However, after they failed to return, search and rescue crews attempted to locate them for a week when they identified their location.

Three fishermen were found alive but one had lost his life and according to KCSG Director-General  Bruno Shiosho, it's presumed he died after drowning.

The rescue team and the fishermen are expected to return by tomorrow.

"In a decisive response, KCGS deployed its vessel to recover the three surviving Kenyans and reunite them with their families and friends. The vessel completed the recovery mission today after rendezvousing with the foreign fishing vessel from the Port of Mombasa. The vessel is enroute back to Mombasa with an expected arrival time of Thursday, December 28, 2023," KCGS stated.

"The missing fishermen endured 27 days of uncertainty which KCGS acknowledges. The Search and Rescue(SAR) operations were in collaboration with Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Navy, National Police Service, Kilifi County and local Beach Management Units."
