A student at Egerton University who has been missing for days has been found dead within the school compound.

Edward Njage, 23 was found dead at the university’s grounds and it remains unclear what led to his death.

Njoro sub-county police boss Jonathan Kisaka said that the lifeless body of the student was found on Thursday in a garden after a search was launched to get him.

“He was battling depression that is according to what his close allies have told us so far,” Kisaka said.

In the last three months, 483 Kenyans have committed suicide which has raised alarm across the country concerning mental health.

Kiambu county leads in the number of people who have committed suicide in the period a recent report by the National Police Service showed.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti this week said that there was need for the government to commission research to determine the root cause of the worrying trend.

The increased suicide cases have been attributed to mental health and depression amongst Kenyans which has been caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have never recorded such a high number of suicides before and this is really worrying. It is time we get a solution to the problem,” said Kinoti.

The youngest person who committed suicide in the three months was aged nine years while the oldest was 76 years.
