Police in Meru have recovered a body of a 12-year-old boy alleged to have been poisoned and killed by his mother at Kathumbi in Meru county.

Speaking to K24 digital, her neighbours who sought anonymity claimed the class six pupil could have been killed by his mother who they said was battling depression after separating from her husband.

“His mother was not behaving okay everybody could see she was suffering mentally after separating from her husband whom they have been living with in Nairobi before she came to rent a house here,” one of her neighbours said.

The neighbours further added that they suspect the boy was poisoned by his middle-aged mother whom they accused of having been abusing the minor physically and mentally on several occasions.

“She seemed not worried even when the police came for the body and sometimes she could beat and shout at her son just for nothing we are saddened by the death because the boy was very bright and recently there is a school that had agreed to sponsor his education,” they said.

Confirming the incident, Imenti North sub-county police boss Ezekiel Chepkwony said they are questioning the woman whom he said seems to be mentally unstable.

“We received a report from Ntakira location assistant chief that there is a minor who was found dead in a house. The body of the boy had no physical injuries but foam oozing from his mouth,” the OCPD said.

He added that his mother was questioned by the police adding that after a postmortem review of any foul play the suspect will be arrested to answer murder charges.

The body of the deceased was moved to Meru Level 5 hospital mortuary.
