A Nairobi man has sued a mechanic for reportedly stealing his motor vehicle's gearbox.

In the charge sheet read out in court, 'Isaac Okode is said to have, on August 11, stolen a Range Rover vogue gearbox valued at Ksh270,000 belonging to Charles Cheserem at a Langata garage.'

In the second count, Okode is said to have obtained Ksh90,700 from Cheserem by falsely pretending to be in a position to repair the gearbox of the said Range Rover Vogue.

As per court records, the complainant took the gearbox to the mechanic at his garage in Lang'ata area with the mechanic promising to send Cheserem the quotation for the work.

The court heard that Okode later that day asked for a down payment of Ksh13,000 as part of the Ksh40,000 labour charge and he was paid Ksh6,100 and Ksh7,100 respectively.

After some time, it is stated that Okode forwarded a quotation of Ksh77, 000 for some parts to be sourced outside the country.

After two months, it is said that the complaint checked on the progress but the mechanic claimed that he had not commenced the repairing work since the spare parts he had ordered overseas had not been delivered.

It was reported that the mechanic started taking the complainant in circles and at some point, Okore said the gearbox was not in his possession and that he could not reveal the location.

It was then that Cheserem reported the case to police on November 15, 2021, leading to the arrest of the mechanic.

He denied the charges before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Philip Mutua who set him free on Ksh100,000 bail pending mention on December 28.

The matter is set for hearing next year.
