92-year-old Mau Mau freedom fighter Mary Muthoni Kirima has finally cut off her dreadlocks of 70 years in an event graced by the former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

In an event attended by the Kiama kia Ma and Kikuyu Council of Elders in Nyeri on Saturday, the Field Marshal agreed to cut off her hair to symbolize her fulfilment in what she fought for.

"I have today agreed to shave my hair. This means that I'm contented that our country has had freedom at last. Generations are now free and what we fought for in the forest has finally been achieved," Muthoni said.

However, Muthoni said that in the forthcoming general election, Kenyans are free to choose a leader of their choice.

Many of the freedom fighters believe that fighting for independence was all in vain since the underserving, commonly referred to as collaborators, benefitted from their blood and sweat.

Speaking during the occasion, Mama Ngina said that it is a good thing for the fighters to be free and urged Kenyans to respect freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives.

"Kenyans should respect our heroes and heroines. They should not be insulted but respected," Ngina said.
