There was a traffic disruption on the Nairobi Expressway after a matatu overturned at the Brookside entrance in Westlands on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

The accident involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus belonging to Super Metro Sacco that was heading to Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday morning.

The speeding matatu rolled and blocked the entrance to the Toll station used by motorists joining and exiting the Expressway near Lion Place.

Traffic police officers based in Westlands responded and managed to clear the road.

The accident comes amid concerns over the increasing number of road accidents reported on the road launched in May this year.

Another accident on Expressway

On Monday evening, more than 20 people sustained injuries after an Embassava Sacco bus rammed a private car on the Nairobi Expressway.

The accident occurred at the Mlolongo Toll station.

Witnesses said the Toyota Prado was waiting for clearance at the exit when the speeding Public Service Vehicle (PSV) rammed into it.

The victims were rushed to various hospitals including Kenyatta National Hospital, Shalom Community Hospital and Machakos Level 5 for treatment.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirmed the incident, further advising motorists to exit/enter the Expressway at the Syokimau Toll Station.

"Motorists are notified of an accident that has occurred along the Nairobi Expressway at the Mlolongo Toll Station, involving a PSV mini-bus. Multiple injuries have been reported, and traffic police are attending to the scene," KeNHA said in a statement.

"Motorists are advised to exit/enter the Expressway at the Syokimau Toll Station, even as rescue efforts are underway at the scene of the accident."

On Saturday, June 25 One person was killed and several others injured after an accident at the Mlolongo Toll station.

KeNHA said that the deceased crashed into a toll booth and other vehicles while attempting to exit the toll station at a high speed.

The multi-billion road project was initiated by the Kenyan government to ease traffic congestion on Mombasa Road.
